Backpackers and campers are always looking for ways to reduce weight.
One of the easiest ways to do this is to replace your tent and
thermarest with a lightweight camping hammock. A typical, single size
camping hammock weighs between one and three pounds - three to five
pounds less than the average tent! Not to mention that hammocks are
easier to set up than tents in windy conditions or after a long day
on the trail.
The best camping hammocks are durable, lightweight and provide mosquito
netting that will keep you as protected as any tent. They're also
comfortable! These hammocks can be strung several feet off of the ground,
protecting you from the cold, lumpy forest floor and any critters that
happen by during the night. Clearly this affords significant benefits
for campers, hikers, and backpackers.
Modern backpacking hammocks are designed to be durable and lightweight,
so they're made from a tough, nylon pack cloth and come with mosquito
netting. You may, however, be able to get by with a parachute hammock.
These spacious hammocks are made from authentic, U.S. Army parachute
cloth and frequently have built in pouches to stow you glasses,
flashlight or a book.
A special warning, however: once you camp with a hammock, you'll never
want to go back to the heavy, stuffy sleeping bag-tent combo again!
