You will want to place hooks or straps between four and five feet from
the ground on your tree or stand for spreader bar hammocks, and five to
seven feet for non-spreader bar hammocks, which bow more in the center.
Ideally, your two anchor points will be between 14 and 17 feet apart for
most hammocks. If you don't have two trees, you can use the side of your
house, a fence or a 4 X 4 piece of lumber planted into the ground in a
concrete base. There are also a number of commercially available hammock
stands.
You will need two 8ft pieces of 1/2 inch nylon rope for the hammock.
Start by folding the rope in half. Insert one half of the rope into the
hammock chair loop, then grab both ends of the rope and pull them over
the loop and then through it.
Pull both ends of rope tightly. Pull both ends of the rope to the back
of your anchor point. Tie an overhand knot and adjust to the recommended
height, pulling the rope tight. Pull both ends of the rope to the front
again and cross both rope ends under the rope work you have already done.
Take both rope ends outward and above the existing rope work, then tie
an overhand knot at this point. Pull the rope ends to the back again and
tie two overhand knots. Repeat all steps on the opposite, and then begin
enjoying your hammock!
