Cleaning and Storage - Hammocks with Spreader Bars
Most hammocks with spreader bars must be hand cleaned because the spreader bars are not removable, making it impossible to wash these hammocks in a washing machine. To hand wash a hammock with spreader bars, you must be especially careful to keep the wood relatively dry.

Lay the hammock out on any flat, hard surface such as your deck or driveway only after sweeping the area and clearing it of any debris or sharp edges. Fill a bucket with cool water and a mild detergent or soap and use a soft brush to gently clean the hammock, frequently getting fresh, clean soapy water to prevent simply transferring the dirt from one area to the next. When you have done one side, flip the hammock over and do the same thing to the other side. Keep in mind that you do not want to get the wood saturated. You may gently wipe the spreader bars with a soft cloth later to remove any dirt. As you wash the hammock, check the ropes for mildew and mold, which will appear as black patches or a dark discoloration. Gently but thoroughly scrub these areas to prevent it from coming back or spreading.

After it has been cleaned, hang the hammock in direct sunlight on its stand or its regular mounting between trees. An ideal time to wash your hammock is on a warm, sunny day. The faster your hammock dries the better. On a warm day, this will usually take one to two days, during which time you should not use the hammock; this prevents stretching of the weave.

If you are planning to store your hammock, you should also consider applying a protective spray to the hammock. When you prepare the hammock for storage, the single most important thing is to make sure the hammock is completely dry. To fold it, hold the hanging rings in your hands and bring the two sides together. If you have a storage bag, use this to prevent possible damage or tangling, making sure that the storage bag is of a weather resistant fabric that will allow the hammock to breathe. If a storage bag isn't available, simply hang the hammock in a cool, dry place.
